A ‘purl’ of Penryn pensioners keen on a knit and a natter are putting their needlework to good use by making charity goods for African children.

The “pop-in” sessions at the town’s Methodist Church started at the beginning of March.

Rose Webber, from the knitters’ circle, said: “It’s a new thing that we have started for people to come in and have a chat and a bit of cake.

“We started a pop-in at the beginning of March and since then we have been doing a lot of knitting for the children in Africa.”

The group of ladies and one man have been knitting blankets, teddies, vests and hats for children in South Africa, which will be taken to Camborne Wesley Church for their Teddy Bear’s Picnic event.

“We just thought we would do something than just sit chatting,” Rose said.

“We have been thinking about it for a long, long time and we never got around to it until now.”

The group’s next project will be to create some shoe box gifts to be sent abroad for African children at Christmas, Rose said.

Anyone is welcome to come to the |pop-in. Those who cannot knit can enjoy a friendly chat alongside a cup of tea and cake.

Their meetings are held every Monday from 1pm to 3pm. Entry through the side door of Penryn Methodist Church.
