Macmillan coffee events stir Helston into action

Events were held under the heading of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which takes place annually and involves people all over the country.

Among the organisations hosting was Helston Community Hospital, where staff, patients and visitors were able to enjoy cake and a hot drink.

The morning was organised by the hospital’s matron Lynda Mchale, helped by staff members including Kate Perry. She had a special reason for wanting to support the charity, after it helped her family during the final days of her late father Noel.

Kate, who helped set up and advertise the event, said: “It was a lovely morning. Thank you to everyone who donated and baked. Macmillan are an amazing cause.”

Sixth formers at Helston Community College also put their money where their mouths were and chomped down a vast array of cakes, buns and biscuits baked and provided by staff and students.

Organised by Natalie Williams, post 16 work experience co-ordinator and sixth form centre manager, the cake sale raised just over £200.

Meanwhile the Halzephron Inn at Gunwalloe hosted an all day event, which began at 11am and ended with last orders.

Cakes were on the bar all day, but the main event started at 9pm when brave customers volunteered to have the hair waxed from parts of their body by Rachel Armstrong of Essence Beauty in Helston.

Becky Cross, of Helston hair salon Head Rush, chopped one brave volunteer’s long hair to a short bob. Both Becky and Rachel, together with Jennie Lovelee Nails, gave cuts and treatments at discounted prices for the evening also.

Raffle prizes were donated by supporters, including wine from Keith at LWC Jollys and vouchers from Head Rush and Essence Beauty.

The event was hosted by owners Ian and Claire Murray and Dave Adams and raised just under £614.
