With the seal mating season now in full swing it was only a matter of time before the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek had some rescued grey Seal Pups to care for.
After receiving many calls over the last few weeks, the Cornwall Seal Group and British Divers Marine Life Rescue has now picked up some pups that need a little extra care and attention.
Three seal pups arrived at the seal hospital, which have been named Aurora, Mars and Eclipse to fit this year’s theme of names for rescue pups – ‘space’. The animal care team has now started the long process of rehabilitation.
Aurora, the youngest pup, had been abandoned. Although showing no signs of illness or injury, at only three days old it was agreed that the Cornish Seal Sanctuary would give Aurora a better start than if she had had to fend for herself in the autumn seas.
For one of the male seal pups, Mars, it was a different story; when he arrived at the seal hospital he had puncture wounds and an eye injury, and had to be given antibiotics.
Visitors to the sanctuary are able to see the pupils for themselves. The hospital expects, on average, to rehabilitate up to 60 seal pups each year between September and February.
