An estimated 200 dolphins were seen splashing in the water off Falmouth yesterday, to the delight of lucky wildlife fans watching.
Passengers with AK Wildlife Cruises could not believe their eyes when, after spotting a number of harbour porpoise, no less than five pods of dolphins came out to play – including lots of calves.
Describing it as a “veritable ‘cetacean soup’”, Captain Keith Leeves said: “Several large pods were initially observed and further offshore more dolphins could be seen.
“It was certainly a cetacean extravaganza and absolutely ‘fintastic’ for all onboard to observe, as wave after joyful wave of beautiful Common Dolphins and their delightful little newborn calves rushed over to greet us.”
Some of the babies were no more than 18 to 24 inches in length, and Captain Leeves said the “playful” group of mothers and calves made an “instant bee line” to bow ride the boat Free Spirit, which operates out of Falmouth 12 months of a year.
“Memories were made and shared by everyone onboard Free Spirit that will last forever,” he added.
