Drunken vandals have been blamed for breaking the Falmouth Christmas tree lights on The Moor, after they were spotted climbing the tree on Tuesday night.

Revellers at the grand illumination ceremony on Thursday evening were told that while the rest of the town would sparkle, the damage caused meant the centre piece of the festive lights would not be switched on until a later date.

The crowds that gathered on the Moor last night were told that they were, "very sorry for their actions".

The two young men had been seen climbing to the top of the tree by a taxi driver on Tuesday evening.
The tree is fitted with 50,000 LED lights and while new parts have been ordered it may be the weekend until the tree will be illuminated

The two responsible filmed their antics and then posted it online – as a result they were identified and traced.

The pair have been spoken to by police and have agreed to pay for the damage caused, providing they do this, no further action will be taken.
Despite rumours to the contrary, police say the two are not currently students at Falmouth Marine School or either of the universities.
