PARTISAN home followers were left in a state of shock as Redruth crashed out of the EDF trophy to old Forest of Dean rivals Lydney.

The scores were level after 80 minutes and 20 minutes of extra time on a cold, windy afternoon failed to bring any further scores. With both sides having scored a try Lydney progress to a potentially lucrative fifth round draw as the away side.

After the match Reds head coach Nigel Hambly apologised to fans for Redruth's performance but paid tribute to the visitors who gave Redruth a lesson in how to win the game.

Redruth were expected to win this match against opponents who are challenging for promotion to national two and Hambly acknowledged that on the day the Reds were not up for a fight and ended up with a very sorry bloody nose.

The Partisan loyal Reds followers could have no real complaint and must have been rueing their luck when top scorer Mike Hook was unable to put over two penalty chances one late in normal time and one in the first period of extra time that may have pulled the game from the fire.

The match was well referred by Bristol-based Richard Parker-Sedgemore, who is no stranger to the Recreation Ground.

The Reds faced a starting line up that showed six changes from the listed visiting squad with key play maker Rory Teague (nephew of British Lion Mike) dropping out of the side due to illness on the morning of the game.

Kicking off to Hellfire Corner, the home side were ahead from the tenth minute, Hook kicking a penalty award.

Half way through the half, following a mistake by a key home player, centre Craig Jones, intercepted and ran half the length of the pitch to cross for a well taken try, which full back Adam Westall converted.

Four minutes later Redruth hit back when, following forward pressure, Mark Bright took a pass from Mark Richards to touchdown his fourteenth try since October in the left hand corner, Hook converting with a good kick from wide out.

Play was very entertaining as both teams strove to attack. Winger Simon Peters almost over for a try, following a good run for the reds.

Lydney were hampered when the referee yellow carded Kyle Marriot on the stroke of half time as the scoreboard favoured a home score of 10-7.

Despite being a player down for 10 minutes Lydney dominated the third quarter and Westall kicked two penalties to put the visitors three points ahead.

In the front row Redruth had brought on Peter Joyce after half an hour, further changes in the second half saw him joined by Ben Priddey and Simon Lutey but they were unable to subdue the visiting pack.

Not quite as large as normal, the loyal home fans, were quiet for much of the game shocked by a stuttering performance from the Reds.

Redruth had more of the play in the final quarter and it was Hook who found the posts late in the game to tie the scores and take the game in extra time.

In injury time Hook was wide with a penalty to the right of the posts and Redruth appeared to score from a catch and drive in the scoreboard corner but it was disallowed for a double movement.

Redruth dominated the first period of extra time but they could not score Hook was off target with penalty and drop goal attempts. Lydney controlled territory for much of the second period to keep the Reds at arms length knowing a draw was good enough for them.

Bright had another tremendous match in the Reds back row and lock forward Luke Collins did most of the line-out jumping. Unfortunately the Reds were unable to get the score they needed to progress.

The rules of the competition only allow for two periods of play in extra time. If the scores are identical after this, the away side gain progress to the next round.

Many Partisan home supporters were not happy with the result, but that's the nature of the game.
