NEWQUAY u11 2 HELSTON u11 2

ON a bitterly cold day with the wind biting and the pitch cutting up Helston tried to play their passing game to unlock the Newquay defence, but came up against a side intent on not losing this La Liga Under 11 game.

Helston had the majority of the first half, but found themselves a goal down after Bain had made a fine save to push the ball against a post only to see it rebound off the post onto his outstretched leg and into the goal.

This spurred Helston into action, and again the play concentrated on Newquay's goal, with Walker and both L Trathen and R Trathen going close, before R Trathen latched onto a fine crossfield pass to side foot into the Newquay net.

The score remained the same up to the half time whistle with Helston continuing to probe.

The Helston side, although not playing to their full capacity, were rarely troubled, but whenever they did break through they found Sedgwick and Mills in good form, and Bain stayed on top of his game.

Newquay's second goal came after a contentious decision by the referee not to award a throw-in to Helston led to Helston players being out of position and leaving Bain with little cover and a fine strike that beat him at the near post.

Helston were up against it and the team's spirit and determination shone through as they gathered their game and went on the offence, with shots from Leathley, R Trathen, R and T Millard all going close.

The equaliser finally came when T Millard latched onto a poor clearance and drove a low shot into the Newquay goal.

With only minutes to go Helston went on the attack looking for a winner, but were unable to unlock the Newquay defence again.

Helston's next game is home to Leedstown.
