PENRYN ATHLETIC 1 WENDRON 1

A REPLAY will be needed between Penryn Athletic and Wendron after they drew their Jolly's Combination League Cup quarter-final tie at Kernick Road.

Athletic, who had the lion's share of the match, might well regret not having built on a great start after taking a third minute lead.

The visitors included new signing Mike Newbury, who two seasons ago was playing FA Vase football, but his links with the club go back to the early years, when he played as a 17- year-old.

Athletic made the best possible start and went close with a Steve Brewer shot in the opening minute.

However, they only had to wait until the third minute to take the lead when an innocuous ball into the box was missed by two defenders to allow Steve Brewer to rifle his shot past Bryan Scoffin.

Athletic posed considerable problems on the flanks throughout both halves, but the final ball into the box was lacking with Wendron confidently snuffing out any threat.

Wendron were restricted to breakaways, but when they did battle their way up the slope, they looked dangerous.

A corner from Steve Kellow flashed across the face of the goal and only needed a touch, but Wendron finally got back on level terms just before half time when Mike O'Neill headed in Kellow's corner unchallenged at the far post.

Scoffin came to Wendron's rescue early in the second half when Dominic Pullen got on the end of Steve Brewer's cross. Pullen controlled the ball and shot back across himself into the far corner where Scoffin did superbly well to save.

The second half unfolded much the same as the first 45 minutes with Athletic enjoying the lion's share of possession, but unable to turn their superiority into goals, with Scoley going the nearest to scoring when he cracked a shot against the bar.

Wendron, always dangerous on the break, wasted an opportunity with 15minutes to go when pressure from O'Neill forced a poor pass. Lee Gribble intercepted and closed in on goal, but instead of shooting decided to pass to O'Neill. Unfortunately, the poor pass never arrived.

Five minutes later Kellow raced clear with three defenders in pursuit, but as he was about to shoot, the ball On Saturday Wendron entertain St Just.
