It was out of the fields and into fancy frocks for Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers’ Club when they held their annual dinner and dance last Friday.

Current members joined with parents and other club supporters for an evening at the Merchants Manor in Falmouth.

They dressed for the occasion, with the girls in long ball gowns and the boys spruced up in dinner suits.

It was a chance for the club to reflect on the success of the past year and honour members who had made particular contributions.

This included a presentation of a cheque to Cornwall Air Ambulance for £5,800, raised during the club’s fundraising activities over the last 12 months.

It was received on behalf of the charity by David and Sue Swift from Helston, who have personal experience of the lifesaving work of the air ambulance.

Members sat down for a three course meal, starting with soup or prawn cocktail, followed by a roast beef main and cheesecake or brownie for pudding.

Afterwards they enjoyed a disco courtesy of DJ Pasty, from St Buryan YFC.

This year’s talk came from Stephen Bone, a farmer from Madron who spoke about agriculture and the young farmer movement.

Frances Hosken, new club secretary, said: “It was a really nice atmosphere again. Everyone made an effort to look lovely, as usual.

“Thanks to the hotel for putting on a really nice meal, and also Bex Jenkin, along with Beth Tremayne and Hannah Smith, for organising it.”
