A project that will see stories from last year’s storms turned into sea shanties in Porthleven will launch tomorrow (Thursday, March 12).

Singers, musicians, fishermen, surfers and “landlubbers” are being invited to take part in Storm Songs by heading along to two sessions at the Smithy, next to Ship Inn, tomorrow and Friday, between 6.30pm and 9pm.

Stories will be collected and songs created, ready for the first rehearsal on March 21, between 3pm and 5.30pm at a location still to be confirmed.

There will be further rehearsals on March 28 between the same times, at the Smithy, on April 11 at the same time at a place to be confirmed and again at the Smithy on April 16 and 17, between 6.30pm and 9pm.

A dress rehearsal will then be held on April 18 at the Smithy, between 3pm and 5.30pm, ahead of the public performance later that day from 7pm until 8.30pm.

To join in the singing people must be available for at least five sessions and the public performance. The project is being run by Encounters Arts.

Local composer Hilary Coleman and visiting Dutch composer Ben Van Bueren will be guiding the sessions and jointly turn the stories into song text and music.

An ad-hoc orchestra will be put together to accompany the contemporary sea shanties.
