Pounding their way through the hot streets of London, two marathon runners from Helston successfully fulfilled the dying wish of their best friend.

James Scorey and Sam Autie completed the London Marathon in a time of five hours, 27 minutes and 33 seconds, on one of the hottest days in race history.

Despite admitting that they were "not natural runners," the two friends took on the challenge in memory of 21-year-old cancer victim Gary Scott, who had vowed to recover from the disease and run the marathon in celebration. Sadly, this was not to be, but shortly before he died - just six months later - the pair promised Gary they would run in his place.

They embarked on a strict six-month training programme and managed to get round with just a few blisters and aches and pains as the worst of their ailments.

James said: "It was a long way and it was really, really hot. But the crowds were absolutely amazing, with everyone cheering us on. We had our own guys up there as well. We're absolutely over the moon. Neither of us are the most athletic people and we're just pleased to do it."

Sam added: "It was an awesome day. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and the crowds kept us going every step of the way, especially the Cornish supporters we took with us!"

The pair have been supported throughout their journey by a band of supporters, many of which travelled from Cornwall to London to help cheer on the duo.

They have also received a "phenomenal" amount of messages of good luck from people across the country. "We'd just like to thank everybody that sponsored us and cheered us on and everybody's messages. We've had so many messages of good luck it's just been phenomenal. We just thank everybody for all their support by text, by email, by coming and seeing us," added James.

The pair ran in aid of cancer and leukaemia charity CLIC Sargent, who supported Gary during his illness. So far they have raised around £6,500 between them and hope to boost this to £7,000 as people are still continuing to sponsor them after the race. Money can still be donated through the Bell Inn at Helston, where Sam works, through any branch of clothing store Sea Salt, where James works, or via their online sponsorship forms at www.justgiving.com/cornishjames or /cornishsam.
