Schools across Helston and the Lizard booked a slot to celebrate literature last Thursday when they dressed up for World Book Day.

It gave a chance for pupils to become their favourite story characters, with inspiration taken from both classic literature and popular culture.

This meant that characters from the new Star Wars film sat down next to the Cat in the Hat and Stick Man for lessons.

Nansloe Academy has become famed for its themed days in recent times and this year was no exception.

For 2016 the school had chosen the children's books by comedian David Walliams to base the day around.

Staff threw themselves into the occasion, dressing as the Queen from the Queen's Orang-utan, pilots from Grandpa's Great Escape and the title character from Gangsta Granny.

Each year group was given a book to focus on and dress from, with other titles including The Slightly Annoying Elephant and The Bear Who Went Boo! for the younger children in the school.

A variety of displays depicting the different books were set up, as well as a trail of activities for pupils to complete.

There was even food inspired by the concoctions served in Grandpa's Great Escape, such as chocolate pudding covered in tomato soup, although few pupils were tempted to try the unusual combination.

Other schools in the area also got into the spirit of the day, with pupils dressing up in a variety of different outfits and encouraged to share their favourite stories.

There were plenty of princesses at Sithney Primary School, with nature also providing inspiration for some children dressing as animals.

Meanwhile, Manaccan Primary School praised pupils for their imagination, writing in the newsletter: "We were surprised by the children’s wide range of literary character choices."

St Michael's School in Helston moved their dressing up to Friday, when they held a book fair that raised £1,639 - far exceeding their target of £1,400.

The school described pupils' efforts over outfits as "fantastic".
