Residents of Penryn and Mabe will be able to have their say next week on plans for a 2,000-bed student village next to the Treluswell roundabout near Penryn.

A series of public consultations is being held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday by CAD Architects to allow people to see the plans for the site and to air their views.

Mark Dawes, managing director at CAD architects, said the proposal is currently an outline master plan to use the land for a student village of "up to 2,000 beds... with student facilities within that."

He said the facilities would be similar to those currently at the Stannary building on the Penryn Campus: a restaurant and cafeteria which could become a venue, as well as offices for use by pastoral staff and a study area for students.

The developers have also drawn up plans for a park and ride facility, a small supermarket, and a budget hotel.

Mr Dawes said the park and ride could be used by the university in term time and become a council service in the summer months, serving Falmouth and Penryn, or there could be a split between university and Cornwall Council use all year round.

He said: "What the developers have been watching is the reaction of the community in Falmouth and Penryn to the addition of a further 2,500 students which an application that the university have made.

Mr Dawes also said the hotel recognised the demand for such facilities across many university campuses, with parents needing somewhere to stay when they visit their children, but it would also be available for general holidaymakers. He added that the supermarket would be subject to consideration by Cornwall Council over whether it was in competition with other businesses in the area.

He concluded: "The three consultations we have next week, we're asking the communities what they think of the general idea.

"Depending on what they feed back to us we will go away and be able to come back with more detail."

The consultations will be held at Mabe Community Hall on August 3 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, and the Temperance Hall in Penryn on August 4 from 4pm to 7pm.
