The sun shone on Sunday for another successful Mawnan Fun Run which saw almost 250 people of all ages taking part.

The event, which has been organised by Falmouth Rotary Club for the past four years, was hailed as the best yet and all the money raised will be split equally between Rotary Charities and Mawnan School PTA.

This year saw the introduction of a new route for the 10K race which attracted a record number of entries. First place went to Colin Snook of Cornwall AC in a time of 34.31, followed closely by Aaron Benney and Steve Strachan. First female home was Emma Paull from Hayle Runners who was also fifth overall. The 5K race was won by Andrew Martin from Mile High who finished in 17.25, with Anna Harrold taking first place for the women.

The one mile children’s fun run was as popular as ever with a great turn out of all ages and abilities. The youngest participant was two-and-a-half-year-old Arthur Whetter who finished just in front of Ann Bennett who took part to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), an illness from which she suffers.

The winner of the fun run was 11-year-old Ben Stevens who stormed home in just 6m36s, with the first girl, Emily Child, who turned nine the day before, hot on his heels in third place overall in a time of 6m53s.

Rotarian Rod Allday, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It is always very rewarding to see so many people taking part and enjoying the fun run and it makes all the hard work by the organising committee worthwhile. We are very grateful to all the local businesses who donated so many fabulous prizes and our thanks go to each of the 50 plus volunteers and marshals, without whom we would be unable to stage the event.”

The event started with an energetic warm up led by Gillian Sadler of Embrace Dance Fitness and, after the event the runners and spectators enjoyed a variety of refreshments and entertainments laid on by Mawnan School PTA. The winners were presented with their prizes by Steve Kimberley of Kimberley’s Independent Estate Agents, who were the main sponsors of the event.
