The chief officer of RFA Lyme Bay dropped in to see Falmouth's mayor Grenville Chappel recently to hand over a cheque for £265 which had been raised by the ship's company through a horse racing event held on board.
Miles Lewis, who is also the ship's commanding officer, said the event had been held as the ship was in the Mediterranean on its way back to Falmouth from the Gulf. The whole ship's company had been involved with the event, which included a barbecue as well as the horse racing.
The money raised was divided, with half being donated to the mayor's charity, which for 2017/18 is Kernow First Aid, and the other half going to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske. Mr Lewis said: "One of our guys had a heart attack while he was here and the hospital looked after him very well so we wanted to give something back."
