Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging local people in Truro to make a New Year’s resolution and unite against dementia by becoming a Dementia Friends Champion in 2018.

People can book now to attend a touring induction day that is coming to Truro on Tuesday, January 9. The day-long session is part of Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme, which is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation acts, thinks and talks about the condition.

Dementia Friends Champions are volunteers who help tackle the stigma and lack of understanding that means many people with the condition experience loneliness and social exclusion. After attending the Truro induction day the volunteers will deliver Dementia Friends sessions across the local area in the coming months.

There are more than two million Dementia Friends in England and Wales. Alzheimer’s Society want to reach even more people so that people with dementia feel understood and included in their community.

Camilla Alfred, senior Dementia Friends regional officer at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Dementia doesn’t care who you are; it could affect us all. It’s set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes, and so many people are facing it alone.

“People with dementia often feel – and are – misunderstood, marginalised and isolated but with the right support and understanding they can continue to live fulfilling lives and make a contribution to their communities. So, make your New Year’s resolution count, and unite with us on 9 January.”
