Helston Athletic 0, Falmouth Town 2

Falmouth Town put in a dominant display to sweep Helston Athletic aside for the third time this season, coming out on top in their SWPL Premier clash at Kellaway Park on Good Friday.

Rob Wearne scored the opener on 29 minutes before David Broglino doubled the lead ten minutes after half-time for Town, who have now won nine of their last 10 league games.

The best chance of a balanced opening quarter came from Olly Walker, whose 20-yard dipping volley was headed for the top corner, but for an excellent diving save from Helston’s Barrie Wyatt.

Town were then presented with a chance to lead in the 28th minute when they were awarded a penalty for handball, but Wyatt saved Marcello Jones’ kick.

But Town’s disappointment lasted only a minute before they took the lead, with Jones finding Wearne in space inside the box for the striker to coolly chip the ball over Wyatt.

The visitors began to kick on and they wanted another penalty on 37 minutes after Walker was brought down in the six-yard box, but referee Paul Kempen waved play on.

Helston produced a mini fightback just before half-time via captain Tom Russell, who headed Steve Jenkins’ superb cross wide before firing over the bar shortly after.

Their efforts continued after the break, with Charlie Young’s shot being cleared off the line before Hugh Howlett's follow-up went high over the bar.

But Falmouth edged further in front in the 55th minute when David Broglino brilliantly headed Walker’s cross into the bottom corner for his fifth goal in six games.

The hosts’ heads refused to drop and they twice came close to scoring, with Phil Cattran and Kyle Marks both volleying narrowly wide within a couple of minutes of each other.

But Falmouth regained the initiative once again with the excellent Walker setting up each of Jones, James Ward and Luke Brabyn, but Wyatt denied the first two before Brabyn headed wide.

Town searched for a deserved third goal until the very end, with Walker once again putting Brabyn in the clear, but Wyatt produced yet another save to restrict the score to two.

Packet Pick - Olly Walker had another fine game on the left flank, causing problems for the Helston defence from start to finish.
