One of the most important British mid-century furniture designers has backed the re-issue of one of her classic ranges.

Architects and interior designers John and Sylvia Reid were commissioned by Stag in 1953 to inject some modernist style into their furniture ranges.

During their 10-year alliance with the manufacturer, the Reid’s progressive designs received several accolades, not least an inclusion in the Design Index by the Council of Industrial Design.

Sylvia, who is now in her 90s and lives near Truro, has endorsed the collaboration between her son Dominic Reid (to whom she has given all the original furniture designs) and Nicholas Radford, son of the original manufacturer, to re-issue of some of the most classic pieces.

The first range to be re-issued is the S-Range of living and dining furniture − designed by the Reids in 1960.

Sylvia said: “I’m delighted that our designs have become increasingly popular and collectible over the years. At the time we were trying to look into the future, and good design is always the product of logical thought and the attempt to provide for the requirements of the world in which we live.”

Dominic said: “My parents’ designs have remained relevant and sought after, but their name and contribution to British design are not as well recognised as perhaps they should be.

“Nicholas, who owns Nathan Furniture, contacted me to propose the idea of a re-issue at exactly the time I had been thinking over the idea, due to the enduring appetite for mid-century design.

“The S-Range is a great modernist design which by definition has stood the test of time and we are very excited to see this iconic British collection re-issued at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Fair.”

John and Sylvia Reid met whilst studying at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Architecture in London at the beginning of the Second World War.

There they formed a relationship which was to sustain them throughout a fruitful and prolific design partnership and marriage until John’s death in 1992.

A total of 13 pieces have been recreated for the launch at Clerkenwell.

The re-issued designs replicate the originals exactly, incorporating unique design details such as the distinctive V shaped brushed satin nickel legs, as well as being crafted from the same original materials, which include teak, beech and black laminate detail. Each piece also carries a limited-edition stamp of authenticity.
