THIS week's Hooray for the High Street spotlight falls on The Grey Lurcher, a splendid gift shop at the top of the High Street, in Falmouth.

Julie Oats, together with husband Chris, took on the shop ten months ago, having previously worked in the famous fashion store Liberty's in London and latterly in Brighton and Truro.

The Grey Lurcher is so-called in deference to the family dog, who is now 11.

Julie tried to have her in the shop, but her less than enthusiastic welcome to customers meant she now has to keep her at home.

"The shop is a quirky, creative mix. I like to buy from local makers and I'm always prepared to try something new. It is not what you'd call a typical gift shop," said Julie.

She added that she had waited patiently for a premises to become available and was thrilled that she was able to move into the top of the High Street, just down from the Star & Garter pub.

"It has a lovely feel at this end of town and it reminds me of the little streets of Brighton. Falmouth has a really creative vibe and I think the university has a lot to do with that.

"Business has been going very well since we opened and people who have come into the shop have been very kind."
