TWO men have been arrested on drugs offences after Newlyn Harbour was closed this morning to allow a yacht to be searched for drugs.after a sailing yacht was intercepted by the Border force and escorted into the harbour.

Writing on Twitter the Harbour Master said: "Unfortunately I have had to close the port of Newlyn for public safety. Under no circumstances are vessels to approach or move within Newlyn jurisdiction without my approval. This is for the safety of all our users."

It was reported that police were in attendance and all vessels were prevented from entering the harbour while the yacht is being searched for drugs.

A statement from the National Crime Agency said: “As part of a National Crime Agency-led operation, the Border Force cutter HMC Vigilant intercepted a sailing yacht of the south west coast of Cornwall.

“It escorted the vessel into Newlyn harbour where it arrived yesterday, Thursday 20 July.

“Two men have been arrested for drug trafficking offences and are now being questioned by NCA officers, who are leading the investigation.

“As a result of this the port of Newlyn has had to be closed temporarily for public safety reasons. Border Force and NCA officers, supported by Devon and Cornwall Police, remain at the scene.”

As part of an NCA-led operation, Border Force intercepted a yacht off the SW coast of Cornwall & escorted it into Newlyn harbour yesterday. Two men have been arrested for drug trafficking and are now being questioned by the NCA.
