Penzance's Olympic champion rower Helen Glover MBE has given birth to a baby boy.

The news was announced over social media where the double gold medallist posted an adorable photo of her young child's tiny foot next to husband Steve Backshall's thumb.

Helen said that her and TV wildlife expert Steve were "excited to welcome Baby Boy Backshall to the world."

The couple were expecting twins, but sadly lost one of them in April. Helen tweeted at the time: "Thanks for all your lovely messages. We've had the hard news that one baby hasn’t made it but we are very excited and hopeful for the remaining baby to arrive this summer xx."

Helen was born in RCH Treliske and grew up in Penzance, attending Heamoor Community Primary School and Humphry Davy School before winning a sports scholarship to Millfield School in Somerset at the age of 16.

She took part in a variety of different sports including tennis, cross-country running, swimming, hockey, and although she found success in each of these (winning a junior international gold medal for running, captaining the Cornish hockey team), it wasn't until she was placed on GB Rowing Team's Start programme in 2008 that she really hit her stride.

At the London Olympics 2012, Helen and her rowing partner Heather Stanning won their first gold medal in the women's coxless pair, and by doing so also won the UK's first gold post box in her home town of Penzance.

The duo went on to defend their title in the Rio Olympics 2016.

Helen met her husband Steve at a Sport Relief event in 2014, and married at Piskie's Cove in 2016.
