The number of gigs taking part in the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly is to be limited from 2020.

This year's event saw more teams enter than ever before, resulting in challenging logistics and extra sections having to be created.

As a result, from 2020 and onwards, the amount of gigs rowing will be limited to 120.

This will have a knock-on effect to next year's championships, which will have a new selection criteria.

These include the Isles of Scilly gigs only getting one automatic invitation; invitations will entitle a club to bring one gig for entry into all races; all Cornish Pilot Gig Association-affiliated clubs will automatically get one invitation and the current Private clubs, Penryn and Porthgain, will get one invitation each. New Private clubs will get an invitation at the discretion of the committee. International clubs not affiliated to the CPGA will get one invitation.

Each of the first 12 gigs finishing in the final of the Ladies' Open on the Sunday of the 2019 championships will secure an additional invitation to that crew’s registered club, along with any club in the first 12 in the Men's Open that has not already got one from the Ladies' race.

Each of the crews finishing top three of the Vets and SuperVets (Ladies and Mens) will also secure their club an extra invitation, if they have not already received one in the Open races.

There will be a ‘wild card’ system that the championships committee will operate at its discretion, allowing extra gigs to be included to make up numbers if necessary.

The maximum number of invitations per non-Isles of Scilly club is three.
