A MAN who collapsed while shopping in Truro on Monday has died.

There was a major emergency response in the city centre on Monday morning after the incident at the city's Marks & Spencer store.

Police and paramedics were sent to the scene.

The A39 Morlaix Avenue was closed by police for a time to allow the air ambulance to land, although it was ultimately not required.

Paramedics treated the man, who has now been named as charity fundraiser Peter Francis, inside the store.

It has since emerged that he was a tireless supporter of Cancer Research UK.

Trudy Stammer, head of volunteer fundraising at Cancer Research UK, said: “It is with great sadness we have learnt about the death of Peter Francis, who for the past 30 years has been a tremendous supporter of Cancer Research UK.

"Peter collapsed on Monday while shopping with his wife. He was a dedicated volunteer who collected for our charity on many occasions, always with great enthusiasm.

“Peter was a member of the Chacewater and District Cancer Research UK committee and earlier this year was presented with an award for his long-service and dedication as a volunteer at Cancer Research UK.

“Our thoughts are with his wife Jenny – also a long-standing committee member – and with his family and friends at this sad time. We hope they can take comfort from knowing that Peter made a significant contribution to cancer research during his life.”
