The Falmouth Society of Railway Modellers is holding an open day on Saturday.

Members of the society will display some of their models and teach people about what makes their unique hobby so fascinating.

There will be railway layouts in different scales, demonstrations and second hand sales for enthusiasts to expand their collections.

David Curtis, who is a member of the society, wrote to the Packet about an experience he had at a young age which prompted his passion for railway models.

He said: "Back in school days around 1946 my copy of the monthly magazine 'Model Railway News' would arrive with the morning newspaper and on one occasion I put that issue in my satchel and took it to school, where, too impatiently, was sneaking a peep under the desk and got caught by the teacher who promptly confiscated it.

"As we, the class, continued with the sums set I occasionally glanced to see him casually scanning through the pages then suddenly stop, appear to come alert and start reading intently! Gosh! I wondered why?

"Worried how to explain its absence when I got home I was called at the end of the lesson and to my great surprise and relief the mag was handed back with only a mild reprimand not to do it again.

"Could hardly wait to get home and safely see what had caught such attention, where I found an article, possibly unique in the model press, on setting out transition curves (usually done by eye and the 'spring' in the rail) with a complex mathematical formula for this: and with all the luck in the world it had been a maths lesson!"

The open day will be held at the Athenaeum Club on Kimberley Place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday September 29. Entry is free.
