One thing that struck me while travelling around Greece was how so many Greek families worked happily together.

In the restaurants, in the local shops and cafes.

That community spirit reminded me of Cornwall in the way that the people here always pull together.

There are many families in Falmouth already working successful restaurants.

Christian Dann and his family who run Muddy Beach Café in Penryn. Bev and Tim Mackenzie at Provedore.

Riccardo and his lovely wife and daughter, who left Italy to come all the way to Falmouth to open their fabulous new Italian café, Paida & More.

Now husband and wife team Ben Martin and Jasmine Sharma have joined the happy band of Falmouth foodies and opened a new Indian restaurant in Penryn called Daaku.

I have met Ben and Jasmine before when we first sampled their sublime cooking from their Secret Takeaway nights which they ran from their house in Penryn. I recall Mrs C enjoying the butter chicken which she claimed was the best she had ever eaten.

Their new restaurant is situated in Islington Wharf and I urge you to taste this food.

This is authentic, clever cooking that packs a punch; and is very different from standard Indian food.

Their use of spice is what lies at the heart of their cooking and the menus cater for both vegan, vegetarian and meat eating guests, using fresh, local, ingredients.

The restaurant is only open Wednesday to Saturday and there is a waiting list – but don’t be deterred, this food is definitely worth the wait.

I admire the idea of these clever, happy families coming together to make a restaurant work. Its clearly hard work and you have to have that desire and a total love of food.

People often say to me why don’t you open your own restaurant if you enjoy cooking so much? In reality, the idea of working 24/7 with Mrs C fills me with absolute horror.

Besides, I would worry my stocks of wine and fizz would become severely depleted every night.

On Sunday night, the rain began to fall and my thoughts returned to Greece and those long, hot nights spent eating seafood on the beach.

“What do you fancy for dinner?” I asked Mrs C, who was busy painting her toenails a bright shade of coral.

She looked up and forced a smile.

“Why don’t you cook a vegan curry? I’ll help if you want.”

“No it’s OK. I’ll manage. I can see you’re really busy.”
