Almost 300 runners of all ages turned out on Sunday morning to take part in Falmouth Rotary Club’s annual Mawnan Fun Run, making it the most successful event to date.

In almost perfect running conditions, the competitors gathered on the start line ready to follow the 10k, 5k and 1 mile routes through the village.

In a hotly contested race, the first three boys home in the one-mile children’s fun run were Joshua Peters, Robert Dinham and Finley Martin all crossing the line within a few seconds of each other. First home for the girls was eight-year-old Jolie Gibbs with seven-year-old Willow Barnes hot on her heels.

The youngest participant in the fun run was 23-month-old Wesley Goldburn and the prize for the best fancy dress went to Alice Pullen, who was dressed as Alice in Wonderland.

First place on the 10k went to Jordan Clay, of Cornwall AC, coming home in a time of 34m19s and winning dinner, bed & breakfast for two at the Budock Vean Hotel.

He was followed by Mile High runners Floyd Ratcliffe and Aaron Benney in second and third place respectively.

First female over the line was Emma Paull from Hayle Runners with Beth Popperwell and Hannah Fox taking second and third places.

The 5k race was won by William Dax of Tavistock AC who finished in a new course record of 16:12, knocking over 30 seconds off the previous best time.

He was rewarded with dinner, bed & breakfast at the Meudon Hotel, with Tom Slattery in second place and 15-year-old Edward Mitchell taking third place.

Wendy Chapman, from Freedom Racing, finished in first place for the women for the second year in a row and eight-year-old Daniel Garland took the prize for the youngest competitor on the 5k, completing the race in a very respectable 24:28.

Rotarian Rod Allday, chairman of the fun run committee, said: “This year’s event has been the best yet - we’ve received lots of really positive feedback from the competitors and we hope to raise in excess of £2,000.

"As always, we are very grateful to all the local businesses who donated such generous prizes and we couldn’t do it without the support of the dozens of volunteers who give up their time to marshal the event.”

The fun run was supported by lots of local organisations from the village who ran stalls and refreshments in the field to entertain the competitors and spectators as they waited for the results to come in.

The winners were presented with their prizes by Steve Kimberley of Kimberley’s Independent Estate Agents, who was also the compere and the main sponsor of the event.
