A Falmouth restaurateur and his three friends will row a 28 foot boat more than 3,000 miles across the Atlantic ocean to raise money for charity.

Andy Grant is the owner of La Cave in Falmouth and also sings with the Oggymen, and he will be taking part in the challenge along with fellow Oggyman Jon Davies and friends Andrew 'Bez' Berry and Alex Fawcett.

Their team – The Atlantic Seamen – will raise money and awareness for the Children's Hospice South West and The Urology Foundation.

The four rowers are no strangers to extreme competitions, with several Ironman races and long distance cycle rides under their collective belts.

Before setting off, the team will take their boat to Truro's Lemon Quay on Saturday October 20 to show people just how small the craft is that will be contending with the elements throughout the voyage.

They are hoping to finish the race within just 45 days by rowing two hours on and two hours off at a time. They will be exposed to the full force of the Atlantic: scorching sun, saltwater sores, sharks and passing tankers.

The Atlantic Seamen are one of 29 teams signed up so far for this year's Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, a race which invites participants to attempt a feat of endurance completed fewer times than Everest has ever been climbed.

Leaving Cornwall at the end of November, the participants hope to set off from La Gomera in Tenerife on December 12, weather permitting.
