A teenager from Helston is preparing to mark his 15th birthday by fundraising in honour of his twin brother who was stillborn.

Helston Community College student Jack Browning had initially only hoped to raise £35, but in the first four days had collected £260.

He is now hoping to reach £350 by his birthday on October 22, with all the money going to Penhaligon’s Friends, a Cornish charity supporting bereaved children.

Explaining the idea on his on his online fundraising page, Jack, from Godolphin, said: “It’s my 15th birthday, but more importantly 15 years since the still birth of my twin Ashley. This year I wanted to do something about that and have decided to try with the help of you to raise money for a local, trusted charity Penhaligon’s Friends.

“The work they do is purely based in Cornwall and the money this non-profitable charity makes goes to supporting bereaved children, young people, parents and carers throughout the county.”

Money can still be donated via the Facebook page “Jack's fundraiser for PENHALIGONS FRIENDS”.

Speaking to the Packet, Jack said he realised he had never done anything to commemorate his brother and “it just felt right this year.”

His dad lives in Camborne and works in Redruth, where the charity is based, so he was aware of its work and felt it was a fitting one to support in this situation.

He described the fundraising amount so far as “crazy,” adding: “Thanks so much to everyone that has donated so far; it’s a worthwhile cause to donate to.”

Jack has already been awarded a special hoodie from the Furry Youth Café, which he attends in Helston. To encourage members to give something back to their community, the hoodies are presented to anyone who reaches £100 in fundraising for good causes.

His mum, Clare Stringer, said: “I’m just so proud of him. Not many teenagers would do that. He’s only 15 and to think of his brother that he lost is just really lovely.”
