Falmouth University’s BA(Hons) Architecture degree has been validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

This recognition from the RIBA, the industry’s professional body, means that the Falmouth course is of a high enough standard to meet the nationally recognised attributes for Part 1 Architecture graduates.

Commenting on the award, the university's Head of Architecture, Tom Ebdon, said: “RIBA validation is about recognising quality and innovation in architectural education. We’re delighted that Falmouth University’s degree course has been judged as meeting and exceeding the institute’s rigorous standards.

“Our course has a distinctive curriculum, focused on hands-on experience as part of live projects, working with local groups, clients, organisations and places. As the only degree for Architecture in Cornwall, the course is firmly rooted in this unique location and draws upon the diverse and sometimes extreme environments that exist here.

“We teach participatory design principles, placing great emphasis on the power of collective decision making, creative engagement and widening the modes of architectural design.”

The course gives prominence to real making, allowing Falmouth’s students to explore the possibilities of what different materials can do, as well as the inter-relationship of materials, spaces, places and people.

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Smith said, “Based in this creative, cutting-edge university, architecture students have a great opportunity to not only develop their professional practice in this vibrant community, but to be inspired by the excellence and expertise across departments and disciplines.

“We are very proud of the work of our academic team that went into achieving RIBA status, while also creating and maintaining a highly motivational and exciting learning environment.”
