When extreme weather hits it can leave people stranded without help and emergency services may not always be able to get there immediately.

It is for this reason that Helston Town Council is creating a community emergency plan for Helston and is now calling for volunteers who would be willing to help when such circumstances hit.

Town mayor John Martin said: “You don’t need any special skills; all that is asked is that you are physically able and willing to work as part of a team to help your neighbour in their time of need.”

Around 60 people are needed to form a 'network' of volunteers, who can visit people in their neighbouring area, giving support and potentially helping direct emergency services to areas where help is most needed.

Councillor Dave Potter, who is leading steering group putting together the emergency plan, said: “The intention is to generate teams throughout the town who will be able to respond to issues affecting residents within the volunteers’ immediate area.

"This might simply involve giving reassurance and passing on information or something more serious should injury or damage befall residents or their property.

"The goal is that all residents should be able to be reached by a member of the volunteer team within a couple of minutes walk."

Volunteers will be coordinated by an emergency response team, who will work alongside other emergency organisations.

The plan has been inspired by the heavy snow earlier this year, when walking became the only way of moving around the town for two days.

Such plans are already in place in other towns, as a tried and tested method of helping reach people most in need at times of heavy snow, flooding and other natural disasters.

It can also be brought into action during other circumstances such as loss of power, or to resupply food during extended periods of disruption.

Councillor Potter added: “Once we have the volunteers, a meeting will be called to further discuss the plan, including volunteer roles and training. If you aren't able to volunteer, please mention this to someone who you think might be suitable.”
