As the world prepares to mark 100 years since the first Armistice Day a particularly poignant Poppy Appeal has been launched in Helston.

Led once again by local organiser Jenny Harvey, this year’s appeal will, as always, raise money for the Royal British Legion whilst remembering the fallen of World War One and all conflicts since.

The 2018 appeal was launched at Helston Tesco with the help of Helston mayor and mayoress John Martin and Amanda Boxer, alongside the Culdrose Military Wives Choir who performed in the supermarket foyer.

Also attending were the commanding officer of RNAS Culdrose Captain Anthony Rimington and the Helston Royal British Legion branch president Commander Jason Phillips.

At the launch, Parc Eglos School was announced as the winner of this year’s competition involving Helston’s schools, to design a poster to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

This year Armistice Day, November 11, falls on Remembrance Sunday and will be marked with services and parades all over Cornwall.

In Helston, this will involve members of RNAS Culdrose joining with Helston Town Council and other town organisations to parade through the town centre for a service at the town’s memorial garden by the Grylls Monument, to include a two-minute silence at 11am.
