Falmouth School's ex-PE teacher Jeffrey Maddern organised a fundraiser which brought in nearly £5,000 to go towards a therapeutic sensory room for his visually impaired grandson Benjamin.

Benjamin was born prematurely in February 2015, and when he was five months old his family realised he was facing difficulties that other children were not.

An MRI showed that he suffered from brain damage, and his family soon discovered that as well as being blind, Benjamin had cerebral palsy and a rare form of epilepsy known as infantile spasms.

His parents James and Becky hope to convert a room in their house in Swindon into a sensory room with special lighting, padded flooring and audio equipment which will provide a safe environment for the three-year-old to explore.

The fundraiser, held on Saturday October 20 at Falmouth Rugby Club, was a huge success and kicked off with Betty Stogs telling a few yarns followed by the Cadgwith Singers who raised the roof with their rendition of Trelawny.

After a raffle and auction to boost the coffers, the Falmouth-based band Summer Wine played a set to close the evening.

There were Choaks pasties and homemade scones and cream (courtesy of Rodda's), all washed down with Skinners beer at the Cornish-themed event.
