Smithick councillor Jayne Kirkham is taking residents' ideas about improving pedestrian safety on Dracaena Avenue to Cornwall Council's highways department.

Three pedestrians have been struck by cars on the road in the last month, two of whom were children walking to and from school.

Councillor Kirkham attended a public meeting at Falmouth Rugby Club on Sunday where residents, councillors, members of Safer Falmouth and town mayor Grenville Chappel brainstormed ideas to improve the dangerous stretch of road.

Some of the proposals they came up with include extending the 30 mile per hour speed limit to cover the whole of Dracaena Avenue and prohibiting parking on one side of the road to install a cycle path.

Another suggestion, put forward by Katie Allan whose stepson Noah was one of the children involved in a collision, was to have Safer Falmouth come in to primary schools and teach year six pupils about road safety before they start walking to school on their own.

Councillor Kirkham said: "We are open to ideas, and these are just some that we have come up with. If any one has any other ideas, fabulous, please let me know.

"There's a lot of young people walking and cycling around Falmouth, and 1,800 children going around the area. It would be a good thing for people in Falmouth if we can combine everyone's best interests."

She went on to say: "[Cornwall Council] are being really co-operative so I am hopeful that some changes can ultimately come out of this."

Councillor Kirkham's efforts have already seen mobile vehicle activated speed signs put up by the side of the road in the wake of the three collisions.

One of the major concerns raised by parents is regarding the stretch of road between Falmouth Rugby Club and the Kimberley Park Road junction, where there is a lane leading to Tregenver Road used by many children on their way to school.

Both of the incidents involving children being struck by cars in the last few weeks took place near this lane, whilst a man was also struck nearer the Esso garage.

There is currently an island refuge crossing near the Tregenver Road lane, and councillor Kirkham's attempts to have a pelican crossing installed were met with some resistance from Cornwall Council who said that it would be dangerous for drivers as it is on a blind corner.
