Peter Pfeifer and his wife Renate run a Cornish pub named after the Lizard Peninsula in a city where "there's not a single pasty shop."

The Lizard Pub in Vienna's trendy Neubau district was opened in August 2011, inspired by the peninsula that holds a special place in the couple's hearts.

Peter said: "We fell in love with that place walking around the cliffs every May and September. It's the best place in the world: it's so special, so peaceful.

"One day, maybe, we'll stay there forever. If not, we'll go there every year, twice or three times."

Their pub has a Cornish flag proudly hanging on the wall that some Viennese don't quite know what to make of.

Peter said: "People don't know much about English pubs in Vienna. They come in and they say 'what's that flag? Ireland?' And I say 'no it's Cornwall, in the south of England, go there!'"

At one point, a man from St Austell applied for a job at the pub along with the promise that he could make a pasty.

Peter and Renate gave him a trial run and put his baking to the test, but he turned out to be exaggerating on his crimping CV and when his trial pasty wasn't up to scratch they decided to go with someone else.

Peter, originally from the Alpine town of Kitzbühel, considers himself an ambassador for Cornwall and takes every opportunity to remind would-be tourists to "behave in the proper way and not make mess" when visiting, and that the Cornish people will appreciate the effort.

The publican said: "The next big step is to get proper pasties sent over."
