Police have closed off sections of Penzance Promenade this afternoon due to waves breaking over the wall at high tide.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area, with sea water flooding the main road.

Lee James Palmer posted a photo on Twitter this afternoon warning: "Afternoon storm hitting Penzance prom, the police have closed off sections to stop traffic being swamped by the waves."

The government's flood information service sent out an alert earlier today warning of possible flooding during high tide this afternoon and again tomorrow morning.

High water at Newlyn was 15.42pm on Tuesday and will be again at 4.04am on Wednesday, although the times of high water will vary along the coast.

Strong force six south westerly winds and offshore wave heights of over three metres have been forecast, causing wave overtopping of sea defences and sea spray in exposed coastal locations in Mounts Bay.

The information service warned: "Expect tides to be around 300mm higher than predicted due to weather conditions.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast."
