A new era dawns for Mylor Yacht Club after Viv Rose was voted in as Commodore at the recent annual meeting.

Following in the first Commodore Beacus Penrose’s illustrious footsteps, Viv now leads a whole new team of Flag Officers and will preside over the House Committee, who manage the yacht club.

Viv is a Cornish boy who was born in St Newlyn East.

He's a retired Royal Air Force Wing Commander who spent much of his Service life flying F4 Phantoms and Tornados in the ground attack and air defence roles as a Fast Jet Navigator.

Viv’s illustrious career has seen him serve in Air Operations Command for NAO, he led the Joint Services Flight Safety and Accident Investigation Branch and saw him act as Chairman of the NATO Flight Safety Committee, travelling globally to lecture on the subject. Viv was instrumental in the development of Air Operations procedures in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan during the campaigns in these countries.

His final years in the military were served in Holland and Germany and he was responsible for exercise planning at the Regional Headquarters of the Allied Forces in Northern Europe.

Extracurricular work had Viv leading up Sail training and skiing expeditions for joint services personnel and occasional organisation of golf tournaments.

Viv has been a member of Mylor Yacht Club since 2011 and has spent the past 4 years as the Training Coordinator.

During his time in post he organised training courses for around 220 of our members and raised a significant contribution to the club income.

He is an experienced offshore sailor, a qualified RYA Ocean Yachtmaster and has sailed extensively around the French coast, crossed the Bay of Biscay five times, sailed around the Caribbean and been to and back from the Canary Islands.

Viv and his wife Jane own a Bavaria 36, 'Cornish Rose' which they keep in Mylor Yacht Harbour.

Although he enjoys long distance sailing, he is increasingly happy pottering about locally and going for a swim around their boat.

Presently living in Perranwell Station, Viv has two sons and a step daughter.

Viv is honoured to be elected as Commodore of Mylor Yacht Club.

The club has been handed over in good shape and, with help from his fellow Flags and the committed group of willing volunteers who man the committees, he is looking forward to making MYC an even more successful place than it is now.

Viv is now also involved with the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association who run Falmouth Week each year.
