Fresh from celebrating their success in being chosen as the Champion of Champions in this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom competition, the Truro In Bloom team joined with members of the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen to plant 10,000 crocus corms on Trafalgar roundabout over the weekend.

5,000 of the corms were donated by the Truro Boscawen Club as part of an international Rotary campaign to end polio. The END POLIO NOW campaign, sponsored by Bill Gates, has seen millions of pounds raised to provide the vaccinations to end the disease since 1988.

While the campaign has led to a dramatic reduction in cases of polio, with just 20 new cases in 2017, there is still more work to do. Rotary Clubs across the world are supporting the campaign through the purchase of purple crocus corms.

President of the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen David Hughes and Rotarian Viv Hendra joined the mayor of Truro Lindsay Southcombe and members of the Truro in Bloom team at Trafalgar Roundabout on Sunday morning to plant the corms.

“The sloping grass banks offer the perfect spot for the corms to be planted," said David Hughes.

“We are confident that early in 2019 there will be a spectacular display of colourful early flowers which will continue to spread and develop in future years.”
