A musical maestro whose career included composing for Vera Lynn, celebrated his 100th birthday at home in Truro on the 19th November, one week after the centenary of Armistice Day.

In his heyday, Ted White was a key figure in BBC music, composing soundtracks for much-loved classics like Fawlty Towers, Steptoe and Son, The Good life and The Royal Variety Show.

As musical associate on a number of visiting American shows, he worked with the likes of Andy Williams and Perry Como.

Ted honed his musical skills when he was a prisoner of war during WW2. Having persuaded the Red Cross to donate some instruments, he put a band together and played for the German authorities in return for extra rations.

Ted’s talent was picked up on his return to the UK when he joined the famous Billy Ternent Band.

As a saxophonist and then musical arranger, he toured the music hall circuit and appeared regularly on BBC radio favourite of the day, Variety Bandbox. The band accompanied screen icons like Grace Fields, Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope.

Over the years, Ted has composed with musical greats such as Broadway legend Philip J Langon, Henry Mancini and Buddy Bregman.

He wrote music for Vera Lynn for her worldwide tours and television appearances. In the theatre he worked on the first London productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Noel Coward’s Sail Away.

Ted’s musical abilities have been passed down to his sons, Michael and David.

Under Ted’s direction, David’s band, Saxpac, performs across the country and abroad, and were invited to play at the Queen Elizabeth Hall by composer Sir Simon Rattle.

In 1998 Ted moved to Truro for a calmer life away from the bright lights of London. Still very active, Ted chose to celebrate his 100th birthday by inviting 70 friends and family to enjoy musical entertainment by celebrated violinist Jonathan Hill and pianist Michael Reed.

Ted’s caregiver, Debbie McCraith, from homecare provider Home Instead Senior Care Truro, said: “Ted is a fascinating gentleman. I can talk to him for hours and love hearing his tales about the stars of the past. His determination got him through the war and into a really prestigious career. I’m very lucky to know him.”

Richard Asbridge, care manager at Home Instead Truro, said: “It was fantastic spending time with Ted on his 100th birthday. He is a gracious man who is so very grateful for his long life. I am delighted we can continue to support him in the same community he has known for so many years.”
