An RNLI lifeboat coxswain has been voted by the public to switch on Falmouth’s Christmas lights as the community’s champion.

Jonathon Blakeston, coxswain and mechanic for Falmouth Lifeboat, was selected ahead of several nominees and is well known in the town for his commitment to saving lives at sea, but also for his voluntary work in the local community.

“It’s not something I would have even conceived of doing!” he said.

“I see it as a bit of a nod of recognition, not just for me, but for the whole station… We are looking forward to it.”

After switching on the lights, Jonathon plans to enjoy Christmas with his friends and family.

“It’s family time, just a chance to sit back, relax and reflect and spend time with the ones who are important to you,” he said.

But being a lifeboat crew member is unpredictable. While he will look to enjoy the festive season and Christmas day, Jonathon insists that the work of his station cannot be put on hold for the festivities.

“I am the full-timer, but the rest of the station is manned by volunteers. We’re on call 24/7. We will continue as normal,” he added.

The Christmas lights switch-on will take place at Falmouth Moor on Thursday, November 29, at 7pm.
