CAMBORNE and Redruth held their Christmas light switch-ons at the weekend as the countdown to the festive season began.
In Redruth the first of several Christmas markets was held during the day ahead of a procession of schoolchildren with their lanterns began the switch-on event before Freddy Zapp from BBC Radio Cornwall did the all-important countdown to the lights being turned on.
Afterwards, the annual Wassail took place, which keeps alive a tradition of carrying a bowl full of specially concocted spiced ale around the town and offering it ceremonially to its pub landlords.
In Camborne, Man Engine artistic director Will Coleman did the honours of flicking the switch on the town's lights.
The entertainment started in the afternoon with performances on the stage in Commercial Square.
Children led a parade ahead of the switch-on itself.
“It’s a highlight of our Christmas programme and this year will be even more thrilling as we’ve got a wonderful real tree at the centre of it all,” said chairman of BID (Business Improvement District) Camborne, Sharron Lipscombe-Manley, who also runs Delight2Bite in Cross Street.
