With the country celebrating independent shops today on Small Business Saturday, Hooray for the High Street visits one such store in the heart of Helston.

Mrs K’s Fruit and Veg opened in July last year and since then has built up a loyal customer base.

Found tucked away in Coinage Ope, between the Tyacke Road car park and Coinagehall Street, its owners readily acknowledge that it sometimes takes a while for people to find them – but once they do, they keep coming back.

This may have something to do with the ever-growing range of stock that the shop holds, which develops according to customer requests.

The shop has recently started partnerships with two local farmers, who now bring their produce directly to the shop to sell, to maximise freshness.

Almost everything sold in the shop is sourced within a three to four-mile radius.

It’s not just fruit and vegetables either. There is now a range of 36 different cheeses to add to the locally made chutneys, honeys, eggs and pies for sale.

The shop was opened in response to local feedback that there was no longer a dedicated fruit and veg shop in the town centre.

Now there is again, customers are being urged to support it to make sure there remains one into the future.
