A FIRE in the centre of Camborne broke out beneath a flat in which people were sleeping, this morning.

Just before 4.30am Cornwall Fire Service's Control Room received a call which was classified as "persons reported" at the property in Commercial Street.

On arrival fire crews found a commercial property, with sleeping accommodation above.

Smoke was issuing when appliances from Tolvaddon arrived, with further appliances from Hayle and Perranporth also attending the scene.

Specialist resources from St. Just and Falmouth and the Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle (RCER) also arrived.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used high power hosereel jets and main jets to extinguish the fire.

At 6am the fire has been extinguished and all people inside the upstairs property had been accounted for.

Commercial Road, from Rosewarne Road to Church Street, remained closed at 6.30am, but it has now reopened.

Fire crews remained on scene damping down hot spots and turning over.
