A building central to community life in Coverack is in "dire need" of repair, leading to an urgent fundraising appeal being set up.

The Fishermen's Rest is the focal point for many events in the village, not least the carnival, regatta and Christmas Day swim in aid of Cancer Research UK, where those taking part change and warm up afterwards.

However, it urgently needs a new roof, with the walls, ceiling and beams above the windows also needing attention. The building also needs a new kitchen area.

Sheila Pryor and Liz Hanley, from the village, have written a letter appealing for funds, saying: "The Fisherman’s Rest is an iconic building situated at the top of the harbour, which could be used a lot more by organisations if it was in a good state of repair.

"We can't let the Rest fall down - it's too important and such a valuable resource for gatherings."

More than £6,000 has already been raised, but the quote for the roof alone is between £9,000 and £10,000.

Fundraising events have taken place, with more to come, but anyone wanting to give a Christmas present to the rest in the form of a donation can make out a cheque to The Fishermen's Rest or pass on cash to Liz Watts in the village.
