QUIET reflection whilst exposed to the elements on a cold, windy night in December.

Not necessarily everyone's idea of a Thursday evening out, but it was fantastic while it lasted.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan has opened its doors (and gates and pathways) for a series of night-time experiences, illuminated by some strategically positioned lighting.

It is the handiwork of internationally renowned light artist Ulf Pedersen, who has returned to reveal the night time magic of Heligan’s historic plantings.

As the website states: "Journey through an after dark Lost Gardens and delight in the incredible textures, colours and atmosphere created by Pedersen’s thought-provoking illuminations.

"New for this year Heligan debuts a selection of Pedersen’s unique sound and light installations in addition to last years display, to create a dazzling nocturnal immersive experience."

Ulf works closely with raw materials of the site, using light and colour as his essential tools, often combining these natural or architectural elements with new architectural forms he has designed. Ulf’s practice exploits both hi and lo-fi technologies and aims to highlight the poetic potential of place.

The overall impression is one of mystique, ambience and calm. The lights "dripping" on to stones, coupled with crystal clear sound effects, make for a particularly mesmeric finale.

At one of the busiest times of the year, I would strongly recommend escaping the gnarls of Christmas shopping/Christmas parties/Christmas songs to enjoy an hour of breezy peace.

It has already had a four-day run, but upcoming dates are:

December 19th-22nd, 27th-30th; January 2-5.
