Following the dramatic rescue of the 180-metre Russian bulk carrier off Gyllngvase Beach in Falmouth this week, hotel head chef John Mijatovic has decided to include the RNLI in his impressive Christmas cake scenario this year.

Money raised from the culinary work of art will also be donated to the charity.

Featuring the Royal Duchy Hotel where John has worked for the last ten years, the cake decoration also includes Falmouth seafront, Pendennis Castle, the beach and, in the sea, the Falmouth RNLI lifeboat.

Details have been painstakingly crafted following a design that John has been working on for many months.

The cake is being showcased in a specially-constructed dome for guests and visitors, before being served up and eaten.

“John and his team have surpassed themselves this year, the cake is an absolute masterpiece,” said Louise Parker, Sales and Marketing Manager at the Royal Duchy Hotel. “To see him working on it has been a real joy. It’s incredible what he’s achieved.”

John’s previous Christmas cake creations have included ‘Christmas Sweetie Trolley’, ‘Santa on the Roof’, ‘Father Christmas in a Chair’ and ‘Christmas Dinner with the Family’.

An accomplished chef who insists on the finest ingredients and whose expertise has won the Royal Duchy’s Pendennis Restaurant an AA Rosette, John’s ‘Duchy Christmas Cake Creation 2018’ is his most ambitious celebration cake project to date.

The cake is being displayed in the Royal Duchy’s Coleman Room from Sunday. Visitors can also purchase raffle tickets in aid of the RNLI to win dinner for two in the Pendennis Restaurant.
