A new memorial plaque has been laid at Penryn's Exchequer Quay for three World War One servicemen who drowned off the pier on September 26 1916.

The soldiers were stationed in Falmouth and are thought to have walked to Penryn for the evening. Due to lights out, they did not see the water's edge on their way back to Falmouth and ended up drowning.

Joseph Herrington was born in Islington in London in 1897 and resided in Wallington, Oxfordshire at the time of his death. He died at the age of 19.

George Harwood was born to Frank and Elizabeth Harwood in 1885 in Curry Rivel, Somerset.

His gravestone shows his date of death as September 26 1917 at the age of 36, although records indicate that he died a year previously at the age of 31.

William Henry Barker was born in Wantage in Berkshire in 1887 where he lived at the time of his death. He died at the age of 29, and the date of his death is recorded as September 27, the day after the other two men.

All three were buried at Falmouth Cemetery.

The plaque commemorating the riflemen from the 25th Reserve Battalion was laid by Cornwall Council's Harbour Office and replaced a temporary one laid in July 2014.
