The owner of the Pasty Shack in Falmouth is seeking a licence which will allow them to serve food until three in the morning.

If the licence is granted, it will "[enable] Pasty Shack to survive," according to applicant Sonia Papper.

The pasty shop in Church Street, opposite the Mangos and Club International nightclubs, will provide their own SIA security staff if permitted to trade into the early hours.

Falmouth Town Councillors were not impressed by the application.

Councillor for Boslowick ward Roger Bonney said: "I'm not in favour. I think you can buy any number of pasties you want during the day without drinking alcohol."

He went on to say: "I don't see why anyone would want to eat a pasty at 2 in the morning, you'd be up all night with indigestion."

Pressures from competing businesses were also cited as reasons for the application.

High rents and business rates are making it difficult to trade, according to Sonia, and the later hours would appeal to students who are "mainly in the town late at night".

She went on to say: "Whilst there are already some late night refreshment outlets available, Pasty Shack offers something different and gives wider choice.

"Those other outlets are not near to Pasty Shack, thereby diluting any congregation of people in a concentrated area."

Falmouth Town Council's licensing committee voted to recommend the application for refusal as it would have a negative impact on crime and disorder.

It will now go to Cornwall Council's licensing sub-committee who will have the final say.
