A new town centre market is being set up in Helston and a call has now gone out for stallholders to take part.

The plan is for the markets to start in April and be held on a monthly basis, but increase to weekly during school holidays.

They will take place at Monument Walk, on the new paved area to the right of the Grylls Monument.

Monday, Helston's traditional market day, is the proposed day for the markets to be held following consultation to date, but suggestions for alternative days would be considered.

The town council hopes to set up a market containing either a varied range of stalls, or to a particular theme or niche, but all being good quality goods and produce.

The intention is to have at least six stalls, with one or two beside the monument to attract attention from the street.

Optional set-up and dismantling of stalls and gazebos can be provided by council staff and volunteers.

Helston projects officer Martin Searle said: "The improved public space at Monument Walk has facilities that make it suitable for staging a wide range of outdoor events and activities.

"These include power (16 amp and 32 amp) and water supplies, public toilet, benches, a shelter and cycle stands, all on level ground just off one of Helston’s busiest streets."

In addition to markets, the council would also like to hear from any individuals, groups and businesses who would like to use Monument Walk as a venue for any other events or activities between April and October this year.

Any suggestions would be welcome, but examples could include outdoor musical events and children's’ events or entertainment.
