A NEW league table shows Cornwall’s dog poo hotspots.

Figures published by Cornwall Council show that in the first three quarters of 2018/19 there have been 429 reports of dog fouling recorded by the authority.

And the number one area so far this financial year for dog poo reports is Penzance, where the figures show that for the first three quarters of the year there have been 20 calls from members of the public about dog mess.

Next in the table is Saltash with 17 and then Tywardreath and Par with 16.

Cornwall Council has also published details for the past three financial years which show that since 2015 Newquay has been the dog poo hotspot of Cornwall with 135 complaints.

In second is Penzance with 123 reports of dog fouling and in third is St Austell with 84.

However while those areas are the ones recorded with most reports a number of reports are also logged with no specific area and account for the most in Cornwall.

The total number of reports for 2018/19 is 429 with 96 of those in no specific area.

And from 2015 to 2019 there have been 2,610 reports of dog fouling received by the council but 708 do not have a specified area.

In 2015/16 there were a total of 623 reports, the following year it was 872 and in 2017/18 the total was 686.

The figures were highlighted by Cornwall councillor Jordan Rowse, who represents Tywardreath and Par, which has one of the highest numbers of reports.

He flagged up the numbers on his Facebook page where he was welcoming the arrival of wardens in the area to catch dog owners who leave their animals’ mess behind.

Cllr Rowse said: “Dog fouling in Par has been a big issue over the last few years so I am pleased to see that the dog warden is proactively out looking to catch the culprits. I know recently a fine was handed to someone locally who was caught in the act so to speak.

“Tywardreath and Par has the largest amount of reports for a parish council area in Cornwall, so I am pleased that residents are taking this issue seriously and reporting dog fouling.”

Failing to clean up after your dog can result in a £100 fixed penalty notice or, if prosecuted, could result in a maximum £1,000 fine.
