COASTGUARDS went to the aid of a man who was stood on the edge of a north coast cliff yesterday morning.

Newquay Coastguards were paged at 8.53am to the report of a person stood on a cliff edge at Mawgan Porth beach, amidst concerns regarding his welfare.

However, as the team arrived, the man jumped from the cliff and parachuted to the beach below.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "As can be imagined, the witnesses who were concerned about the person and members of the public stood nearby were initially very distressed at seeing someone jump from a cliff before the parachute opened.

"Please think carefully before you do anything similar."

The spokesman thanked members of the public who made the emergency call, adding that they "did the right thing".
